Giuseppe Ettorre

Principal bass, Orchestra of la Scala, Milan

First double bass soloist at the Orchestra of La Scala Philharmonic, Giuseppe Ettorre is an active soloist and chamber musician. He studied with professor Leonello Godoli and professor Franco Petracchi. Winner of the "Bottesini" competition in Parma in 1989 he was also winner of the ARD competition of Bavaria in 1991.

His recordings include two discs on the NBB label, with works by Bach, Rossini, Bottesini, Berio, Henze and Piazolla.

Giuseppe is also interested in contemporary music: from jazz to new age. He has worked with Bobby McFerrin and Stefano Bollani, performing as a trio, accompanied by the Orchestra of La Scala, Milan, conducted by Riccardo Chailly. This DVD was recorded on the Decca label. "Sextet" is a CD which contains 16 of his own compositions for solo double bass, and includes pieces for unaccompanied bass and an original group of 3 double basses, harp, piano and percussion.

In the educational field he is active giving master classes in Italy and abroad. Since Summer 2016 he has taught in the “Accademia Chigiana of Siena”, and in September 2017 he was appointed Visiting International Chair in Double Bass at Birmingham Conservatoire (UK).

He plays an instrument made by Custode Marcucci (1890)

As a soloist, he has performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, La Scala Philharmonic (“Per questa bella mano” by W.A.Mozart, the Gran Duo Concertante by G.Bottesini) and with the Porto Alegre OPSA Orchestra in Brazil (Concerto by Nino Rota).

As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with Berliner Phiharmoniker Sextet, the Borodin Quartet, the Quartet of La Scala and the Trio di Parma, with whom he performed Schubert's Trout Quintet on tour in Italy.
